Cora Lee Manning

July 9, 1931 — December 19, 2017

Cora Lee Buchanan Manning was born to the late Annie Mae Dobbins July 9, 1931 in Nashville, Tennessee.


She accepted Christ and was a member of Roger Heights under the pastorage of Pastor C.R. Williams. She later joined Sylvan Street Baptist Church under the late Reverend Moses Taylor, Sr. Currently serving under Pastor Darrell Short.


She attended Haynes High School.


She was married to the late Raymond Manning who was the love of her life.


Cora retired from Vanderbilt University as a Lab Technician. She was also employed by The John Irvin family for many years.


In her spare-time she loved crocheting and cooking pastries. More importantly, spending time with her family.


Cora is preceded in death by her parents, Annie Mae and Tom Dobbins; son, Willie (Tommy) Buchanan; brothers, Tom Irvin and Willie Floyd, Sr., and James Lockett, Sr.; sisters, Mary F. Buckner and Eldress Eva Luster; granddaughter-in-law, Dr. Shewanna C. Buchanan, D.,Edu. Cora was the eldest and last survivor of all her siblings.


She leaves to cherish her memory, devoted grandchildren, Antoine (Tony) Buchanan of Antioch, Tn., Courtney Buchanan and Alice Alexander of Tampa Fl.; Great grandchildren, Carson and Parker of Antioch and Patrick of Tampa Fl., devoted daughter-in-law and caregiver, Norma Buchanan. Loving family, Rochelle and Simone Gonzales; aunt, Mrs. Alice Harper of Pontiac, Mi. as well as other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.


Cora’s memory will be cherished by all who knew her. A special recognition to Mrs. Sherry Irvin Moore family and the late John and Betty Jo Irvin. Cora loved the Sylvan Street Baptist Church family and they loved her and took especially good care of her. She served the Usher Board and several other ministries until her failing health.


Cora was often referred to as Mrs. Manning and had a unique way of “telling it like it is”, straight forward but jokingly, always followed with a warm smile.


She was loved by many special friends and families, Mrs. Mable Coates, Mrs. Effie Clark, The Weavers, Morgan-Puckett, Manning, Lockett, Patton, Bogle families and her maternal Johns families. A very special love for each member of Sylvan Street Baptist Church. Cora demonstrated and loved the Lord with a caring spirit. She lived a fulfilled rewarding yet simple life, shown by how she cared for others.
