He married Linda Shultz on August 8, 1982 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Michael was employed for Steel Coils for 15 years then Cherokee Marine for 10 years until his health began to fail him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ossie Lee Fitzpatrick Garrett; grandmother, Ruth Fitzpatrick; sister, Mary O. Garrett; nephew, Anthony Buchanan and Eric Buchanan; aunt, Gladys Garrett; and uncle, William (Dorothy) Fitzpatrick

Michael leaves to cherish his memory, yet mourn his passing, devoted wife of 32 years, Linda Shultz Garrett; son, Davonte` Garrett; daughter, Khadira Garrett; brothers, Lee Andrew (Linda) Garrett of Nashville, TN., Willie (Thu) Garrett of Wisconsin, Mickey (Bobbie) Garrett of Tomah, Wisconsin, and George (Theresa) Garrett, Jr., of Jamesville, Wisconsin; sisters-in-law, Patricia Brown, Stacey Shultz & family of Beloit, Wisconsin; nieces and nephews, Lisa, Latrish of Nashville, Shemeca, Termaine, Stormy, DeVon all of Tomah, Wisconson, George, III and Taleah of Beloit, Wisconsin; special friends, Mrs. Cat, Stephanie Gates, Earl Gates, and Cedric Little; and a host of other family and friends.
