Otis Lamar Lewis Jr.

On Wednesday March 14, 2018, Otis Lamar Lewis, Jr., affectionally known as ‘Big O’ gained his heavenly wings at the age of 62 years. Otis was born September 2, 1955 to Otis Lamar Lewis Sr. and Delores Lee Lewis, in Columbus, GA. He accepted Christ at an early age at Providence Baptist Church, in Lato, AL, where he was a devoted member of the Junior Choir. He attended Mt. Olive High School, where his love for football was cultivated. He resided in Phenix City, AL until moving to Nashville, TN to pursue his academic/football career at Tennessee State University. While attending Tennessee State University, he was apart of four successful football seasons under Coach John A. Merritt from 1972 to 1976.

It was during this time, he met his ‘Queen,’ of 38 years, Angela Danice. This union yielded two children, Shonya (Ray) McKinley of Hendersonville, TN and Crystal (Sedrick) Burge, of Atlanta, GA.

Otis’ love for Tennessee State University was very prevalent throughout the various facets he served including Media Relations and the Tennessee State University Football Alumni Association, where he served as Parliamentarian.

Otis was also a faithful member of Sylvan Street Baptist Church for over 24 years. It was here that he served as a Deacon, President of the Men’s Choir, Mass Choir Member, and Temporary Superintendent of Sunday School. He was also a member of the Faith Messengers Quartet, where they traveled to different events spreading God’s love and Word.

For thirty-seven years, Otis was a valued employee of the Metropolitan Davidson County Sheriff’s department where he held many roles during his tenure.

He is proceeded in death by his parents and brother, Michael E. Lewis.

Otis leaves to cherish his memory loving wife, Angela Danice Lewis; two children, Shonya (Ray) McKinley of Hendersonville, TN and Crystal (Sedrick) Burge of Atlanta, GA; five grandchildren, K.Cameron, Sedrick II, Kennedy, Samuel, and Spencer; sister, Deborah (Donald) Davidson of Phenix City, AL; brothers, Larry Miles of Montgomery, AL and Timothy Lewis of Phenix City, AL; brothers-in-law, Robert McGee and Wilbur McGee, both of Jackson, TN; sisters-in-law, Clotee McGee of Toledo, OH, Lizzie Cleveland of Nashville, TN, and Vivian McGee of Jackson, TN; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family; special friends, James Thompson, George Hendricks, Monae London-Fletcher, Marilyn Alford, and Dianne Bass.
