Barbara Jean Herring

August 14, 1934 — October 29, 2017

Barbara Jean Warren was born on August 14, 1934 in Nashville, TN to Milton and Margie Warren. She received a formal education through the Nashville public school system graduating from Haynes High School in 1952. Barbara turned her life over to Christ at an early age, and was faithful throughout her life.

Barbara was united in holy matrimony to George Edward Herring Sr. and to that union was blessed with four children. She was an active member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church serving on the Mother’s board and Senior choir. A member of the Stone River District Missionary Board Association and the Haynes High School Alumni Association until her health failed.

Barbara began her work career with George W. Hubbard Hospital as a dietary worker. She was employed by the college for 31 years, working herself up through the ranks retiring as a registered dietitian and manager of the cafeteria. She enjoyed cooking, singing, gardening and making her favorite hand cranked homemade vanilla Ice Cream and spending time with her grandchildren.

Barbara participated with the Northwest YMCA Silver Sneakers Senior fitness program and was a recipient of the volunteer of the year award. She was also editorialized in the May 1998 of the Goodwill Ambassador as a peer Counselor with the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) for her managerial skills, positive attitude and genuine concern for others.

Leaving to cherish her memories, four children, Vickie (William) Cummins, Amanya Diggs Jackson, George (Chevene) Herring and David Herring; four grandchildren, Anthony Carlos (Tawanna) Petway, Verneda Herring, Anethia Diggs and Quinton Herring; three great grandchildren, Taniya & Anthony Petway II and William Dailey IV; two sisters, Eleanor (Willie) Smith, Julia Britt and a host of nieces, nephew, cousins, relatives and friends.
