James (Jimmie) L. Alexander

Mrs. James (Jimmie) L. Alexander, age 104 transitioned from this earthly life to eternal life on Sunday, May 31, 2020.

Jimmie Black was born May 18, 1916 in Cedar Hill, Tennessee. She was the oldest of 13 children born to James Monroe and Linnie Black who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by husband, Arthur Harris Sr. and husband, Dr. Robert l. Alexander, sisters Mattie Black, Mossie Lane and brothers Robert Black Wallace Black, Willie D. Black, King Black, Hayden Black.

Jimmie departed this life on May 31, 2020 in Springfield, Tennessee. She touched many lives with her warm smile, loving spirit and business knowledge.

In 1945, Arthur Harris, Sr. and Jimmie Black were joined in Holy Matrimony. To this union, one child was born, Arthur Harris Jr. In 1970 Jimmie Harris and Robert l. Alexander were married.

At an early age, Jimmie professed faith in God and became an active member of the Church of God, Springfield, Tennessee. Following her move to Nashville, Tennessee she became an active member of New Covenant Christian Church, Disciples of Christ.
She attended the public schools of Springfield, Tennessee a d graduated from Tennessee A&l State College in 1954. After college Jimmie, due to her business knowledge and organiza- tional skills made a career as secretary, first at Meharry Medical College then Fisk University.

Jimmie held many positions in the Nashville Duplicate Bridge Club, most notably treasurer. When the club held a tournament where about 300 members were in attendance, Jimmie single-handedly had several fundraisers for the purpose of “seed money” for the Spring National Tournament.

Jimmie was an excellent gardener and cook. She was famous for using every ounce of a chicken, legs, wings, breasts, thighs for frying or baking; neck and skin to make cracklings, ant the oil for frying more chicken.

Jimmie was affectionately known as “Mrs. A.”. Being the oldest of 13, Jimmie was a mother to her younger siblings long before she had a biological son. She had many challenges in growing up but with the blessings of the Lord, she had a good life.
Jimmie leaves to cherish her memories a devoted son, Arthur Harris, Jr; four brothers, Joe Black, Arthur Black, Leon Black; two sisters, Eloise “Ann” Cunningham and Grace Ellis; sister-in-law, Mattie Harris; stepsons, Robert A. Alexander and John Alexander; numerous nieces and nephews; and dear friends, Leon and Pat Sheffield, Betty Terry and daughters Stacy and LaShaunda and play grandchildren, Taylor, Kindle and Gibs
