Jerry was born in Prospect, Tennessee to Hezekiah Humphrey and Lillian Smith Humphrey. Jerry was educated in the Davidson County Public School System. He entered the United Sates Air Force, and later attended Tennessee State University and University of Memphis where he earned his Bachelors of Science and Masters of Science degrees.
Jerry loved and adores his grandchildren, and was an inspiration to many of the youth at church and the barbershop. His play fullness and witty sense of humor attracted many to him where he was affectionately called “granddaddy” by everyone.
Jerry was well loved. During his illness, he was visited by hundreds of people. He freely shared a candid sense of humor. He served as head Trustee of Phillips Chapel C. M. E. Church for more than two decades.
Jerry worked for over 30 years for the State of Tennessee Department of Health and Commerce and Insurance. In addition he worked as a Master Barber with his father, then alone side his lifelong best friend, Albert Overall.
One of Jerry’s last talks with the family he quoted 1 Corinthians 15: 55, “O death where is thy sting? O, grave where is thy victory? “He truly believed this, and as he told everyone. He died like a champion……
Jerry leaves to morn his passing, his devoted wife of 43 years, Jacqueline Humphery; daughter, Mareka (Marcus) Wilcox; devoted grandchildren, Madison, Morgan and Marcus II; five sisters, Carolyn (Alfred) Coleman, Lenetta (Aaron) Woods, Sheila Crawford, Roslian Humphrey and Ethel (Hershel) Brooks; aunt, Katherine Smith; sisters-in-law, Beverly Humphrey, Dorothy (Ewing) Starnes, Latrice Starnes; father-in-law, Paul Goodloe; best friend, Albert Overall; dear friend, Aundria Majors; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many many friends.
