September 19, 1935 — August 19, 2018

On Sunday morning, August 19, 2018, John Eugene Overton passed away peacefully and swiftly at St. Thomas Midtown Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.

John was the oldest of 10 children born to the Pirly, Sr., and Roberta Brown Overton on September 19, 1935. He was educated in the Giles County Public School system and graduated from Bridgeforth High School in Pulaski, Tennessee.

John accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of St. Paul Agnew AME Church in Pulaski, TN with the rest of his family. In his adult life he moved to Nashville, TN.

In 1955 he met the love of his life, Virginia Allen. They were married in 1956. To this union two sons were born, Edward Eugene and Reginald Eugene Overton. Virginia and Reginald have preceded him in death.

John enlisted in the United Stated Army where he served 3 years. He later became employed with South Central Bell for approximately 45 years.

In 1969 John and his family united with Friendship M.B. Church where he remained a faithful, active and dedicated member. He served as a Deacon, Men’s Ministry and Seniors Ministry for many years.
John absolutely loved his family and adored his church family. He loved gatherings with family and friends and could always be easily spotted being dressed to impress from head to toe.

It should be noted, John became ill while attending his beloved Friendship member on the date of his passing.

John was a great story teller, he has a beautiful welcoming smile all the time. John could often be seen encouraging the younger generation of the family with words of wisdom. He was indeed the patriarch who will truly be missed and never forgotten.

John is preceded in death by both parents, wife, Virginia Allen-Overton; 3 sisters, Lela Overton Brown, Hattie Overton, Marthel and Mattie Overton Brown; son, Reginald Eugene Overton; brother, Clifford Lee Overton.
