In Loving Memory
Laura Lee Ammerman
1958-2016

Laura was born in Santa Monica, CA, and grew up in Malibu. Her parents are Robert and Lorna Ross. Robert passed away last March. She has a sister, Linda, and twin brothers, Donald and Douglas.

After finishing school, Laura began teaching at Carden Conejo School, grades kindergarten through 8th. While teaching, she graduated from Control Data Institute. She loved working with children and decided to continue with teaching instead of pursuing the computer field.
She met Norm, her husband-to-be, at a religious workshop in Summer 1992. They were engaged three weeks later and married 10 months after first meeting, on a beautiful June day at her parents’ home.

Their son, Daniel, was born in 1995. Being a school teacher, she loved reading stories to “D” before bedtime. He loved it, too, and always asked for more. Because of her attention and knowing the importance of reading, Daniel loves reading books to this day.
Being active in her church, she was elected and served two terms as 2nd Reader of the Christian Science Church in Malibu.

Her husband’s employer, Nissan North America, announced in late 2005 they would be moving their corporate headquarters to Nashville, TN by Summer 2006. They decided to follow his employer, and moved to Murfreesboro, TN in June 2006. After 19 years of teaching, Laura retired at the time of the move and never regretted it. Once settled, she had no desire moving back to CA. She fell in Love with TN, saying she truly felt “at home”.
As a new resident of Murfreesboro, she quickly became a member of Newcomers, a group that welcomes people moving in the local area. She also joined the local church and again elected as 2nd Reader.

She always had an interest in and a desire to join the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), being inspired by her great grandmother who was a prominent member. Before joining, she got her son Daniel involved in the CAR (Children of the American Revolution) by herself becoming a CAR Senior Leader. In Summer 2009, she was accepted as a member of the Colonel Hardy Murfree Chapter NSDAR. Later on she was elected as Chapter Registrar. She enjoyed meeting new people, making friends everywhere.
One of her last of many positions at DAR was being Chairman of the Fall Carnivals and social events for the patients at the Murfreesboro Veteran’s Administration (VA) Hospital and Fisher House. In the three years she was chairman, she was in charge of three carnivals and two socials. Working with the vets was the same for her as working with class students – she loved them all very much.

Laura passed away peacefully at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro. She was lovingly cared for and kept comfortable during her stay. Elaine O’Dell Nixon, her long-time friend of 49 years, came out and stayed in the hospital during her last days.
Laura is survived by her husband Norm and son Daniel.

For anyone wishing to donate to a charitable cause in Laura’s name, it would be recognized as a very selfless deed. If looking for an organization, please consider Tennessee Fisher House, Inc. For more information, go to http://www.tennesseefisherhouse.org/
