Lewis Hardin Mcgill

March 5, 1921 — January 25, 2021

Monday, January 25, 2021, Lewis Hardin McGill entered into a peaceful rest at the age of 99.


Lewis was the 7th of 10 children. He was born on March 5, 1921 to the late Edmund Lewis and Laura Lee (Wallace) McGill. With a strong spiritual foundation, Lewis was baptized at an early age at Center Star Church of Christ in Duck River, TN. He was very involved in the establishment of Scott Avenue Church of Christ in Nashville, TN and later worshiped at Buena Vista Church of Christ, also in Nashville, as long as his health permitted.


Lewis started his education attending public schools in Hickman County, TN where he graduated from O. H. Bernard School in 1941 in Centerville, TN. Following high school graduation, Lewis was drafted and honorably served in the Navy. His military career began in 1944 and included a tour of service in World War II. After his military duty, Lewis attended Hampton University in Hampton, VA and Fisk University in Nashville. During his educational pursuits, Lewis studied mathematics and drafting which were both instrumental when he embraced the task of building his mother a house.


Lewis began a rewarding career with the United States Postal Service as a Postal Clerk and further advanced to the position of Postal Inspector until his retirement.


Lewis was preceded in death by: his parents, his siblings - Luther, Mattie, George, Frank, Elizabeth, Mary, Ophelia and infant brother James; 8 nephews - Paul, Mace, Thomas, Mitchell Jr., Johnny, Marshall, Kenneth and James; 3 nieces - Jean, Annie and Laura.


Fond memories will comfort his brother Graham Q. McGill, Union City, TN, nephews - Joe Scates (Brenda) West Milford, NJ, Dwyanne McGill (Deborah) Louisville, KY, Larry McGill, Los Angeles, CA and Michael McGill, Louisville, KY; nieces - Sarah Cowan, Louisville, KY, Dorothy Scates and Clara Moore, Centerville, TN, Elizabeth Keys and Claudia McGill, Louisville, KY, Mary Flagg Centerville, TN and Debora McGill, Louisville, KY; nieces-in-law - Audrey Scates and Loretta Scates, Nashville, TN, and Mable Scates, Centerville, TN. Uncle Lewis will be held in loving memory by many great-nephews, great-nieces, cousins and friends.


For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord.
So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.
