Richard Lee Maxwell Sr.
August 19, 1946 — March 23, 2021
On August 19, 1946, a son was born to the late Wash Scruggs Maxwell and Will Ella Brown in Nashville, TN. Richard Lee “Lightening” Maxwell was called to rest peacefully at his home on March 23, 2021.
He was united with Olivet Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor John Robert Holt. In 2009, he joined the Tabernacle of Glory Church under the pastorate of Rev. William V. Green, were he served as a faithful member, mentor, and friend until his health declined.
He was educated in Nashville Public School System and a proud graduated of Pearl High School. While in school, Richard worked at DeMoss and Smith as a butcher to help his mother support the family. He attended Job Corps—Office of Economic Opportunity to learn a trade. Upon completion, he was employed for five years at Nixon Detroit Diesel. He retired from Peterbilt after 38 years of service where he received the nickname “Lightening”. He served our county and retired after 22 years of service in the United States Army as a Retention NCO 30th Finance and served in Desert Storm (November 1980-June 2002). He was a mason at Capitol Hill Lodge 251.
Richard loved to cook, grill, visit the sick and elderly and feed the homeless. He was a very giving man and helped everyone who needed help. He was loved and respected by many, young and old.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents, wife Beverly Rucker Maxwell, ex-wife Linda Gayle Maxwell, aunt Catherine Brown, sister Janice Leggs, brother Sweeney Brown, daughter Lavonnya Lynette Wells, granddaughter Keisha Shirvon Wells.
He leaves cherished memories with his sons, Richard L. (Shelia) Maxwell III, and Jeffery Rucker; daughters, Mattie Patrice Maxwell, Korene Fitzgerald and Consuella (Steve) Burney; brother, Samuel (Tina) Brown; sister, Ella Mae “Tassie” Miller; 19 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Then there is a special circle of close, devoted friends who include Gwen Collier, Esther Gardner, Roy Rodgers, Richard Hancock, Damon Warfield, Will Lewis, Mable Osweigie, Carolyn Washington, and Gilbert Crutcher.
Special thanks to St. Thomas West Hospital and Staff, Dr Barr Biglane and Staff, Caris Hospice and Staff, Suncrest Home Health and Amedisys Home Health.
A Mason service will be Saturday, April 3rd, 2:30-3:30 pm; Visitation 3:30-4:30 pm; Funeral 4:30 pm at Olivet Baptist Church, 144 Ewing Dr. Interment 11am April 5th in the Middle TN Veterans Cemetery.
DUE TO COVID-19, A FACE MASK IS REQUIRED, UPON ENTRY OF THE CHURCH, TEMPERATURES WILL BE CHECKED AND PLEASE KEEP SOCIAL DISTANCE IN MIND AT ALL TIMES.
