James Alton Lyles

Detroit, Michigan

James Alton Lyles was born October 7, 1931, in Spartinsburg South Carolina, to the late, George and Naomi Lyles, who preceded him in death. James, attended school in, Hazzard, Kentucky and later moved back to, South, Carolina.

When he was old enough, he enlisted voluntarily into the, U. S. Army.  James fought valiantly in the Korean War, which he often mentioned was a test of his faith, Bravery and luck! Upon discharge from the Army, James went to find a new life in, Detroit, Michigan. In the, Motor City, James worked for, Chrysler Motor company until retirement! He took Great pride in his work!

James, married Margo Phillips, who proceeded him in death, March 25, 2023.

James often shared stories of his life! He wore many hats, did many jobs and traveled extensively!  He was A Black activist that supported the pro black movement and advancement of Black people! He was a, Staunch supporter of the NAACP! Many of you did not know, James was a “Black Panther!” An Active member of the Black Panther Party, in its inception. He was a political enthusiast and a Merchant Seaman.  James, lived through, Jim Crow, when Blacks were segregated, brutalized, marginalized and killed, just for being! He attended the, Million Man March, Was alive to see the first, Black President, and don’t get me wrong. He was no, Saint as he was once a laborer on the “Chain Gang!” He would want that mentioned, as he so proudly spoke of it!

With two bouts of, Prostate Cancer, once at 60 years old and most recently, James fought Bravely and Valiantly until he succumbed to his illness! An Avid Heath Enthusiast, James worked out religiously up until his late 80”s still able to bench press 300lbs at least once with his small frame! Lol he was one of the strongest Men I knew!

A Bombastic Personality that was undeniable, whenever, he entered a room, he commanded attention! No one was ever left without laughter from his quick wit, always on point humor and candor! He was the “Light In The Room!” Unapologetic for anything he ever said or did and unabashedly himself!

James was a little Man with a Big Heart! Always looking out for anyone in need, and Always taking care of his family! He leaves to not mourn but cherish his memory a beloved daughter, Joyelle Jackson, A Grandson, Anthony Jackson, 2 Sisters, Ellie Thompson, Eloise Fuller and a host of Great Nephews and Nieces. He will be Sorely Missed!
